Choosing your Subjects

How to decide your subjects

The first important thing to realise here is that you must have expert knowledge in your chosen subjects.

In order to teach something, you must have a complete understanding of it. The last thing we want to do as tutors is leave anyone in doubt over the subject we have been hired to teach.

Know your levels

It will be useful for any applicant to have an idea of the general structure of the Scottish curriculum. If you don’t have this yet, don’t worry, we are always happy to inform new tutors about the layout of the levels within the curriculum. The most important thing here is to make sure you don’t find yourself in a position where you are teaching something you don’t know.

Revision is necessary

We know that the brain takes in a lot of information and that some of it escapes over time. We are not saying that you can’t study before you give sessions on your subject and we in fact encourage this. It’s always much better to go into a session with a plan, and a backup should things not work out.

But if you choose a subject, remember that learning something from scratch and then being able to teach it is very difficult. So you are best to choose topics and areas where you have a strong core of knowledge and support this with consistent research and revision. We are never too old to learn new things, but we can’t be teaching completely blind.

Multiple subjects?

You can’t choose your strongest subject? Fantastic, you can teach both, or even all three! We offer a wide range of subjects and we rely on tutors with more than one subject on offer to make this possible. If you see that we don’t offer a subject that you would like to teach, you may be the reason we can then offer that subject as well.

Tutors who teach multiple subjects also benefit from variety. If you teach two or three different subjects, the job is much more exciting!
